I've worked as a photographer ever since spending a summer in the mid sixties photographing in Europe. Working in the anti Viet Nam war movement added a political twist to my photography and I spent the rest of the sixties listening to Simon and Garfunkel and making a living from architectural, technical and fashion photography. I avoided babies and weddings and sought nudes and landscapes instead.
My photographs and writing have been published widely in newspapers including the Globe & Mail and magazines including Camera Mainichi, Camera Canada, Saturday Night and Arts West. I've curated fifty photography exhibitions at Open Space Gallery and was a consultant to the Winnipeg Art Gallery's photographic collection. I've taught photography for many years at Camosun College and the University of Victoria where I managed the University of Victoria's Advanced Imaging Laboratory, a computer based teaching and research imaging facility. I also taught Photojournalism for twenty years in UVic's Writing Department.
Photographic projects that I'm working on include a series on 18th century landscape gardens in England and a rephotographing of the Parisian scenes photographed by Eugene Atget in the early twentieth century. Other projects include documentation of street graffiti around the world and the nude in the landscape. Recent work includes computer manipulated photographs of Venice and a new landscape and garden series. Books include the Stereo Show and An Admirable View. I shoot in a studio located in Victoria's historic Chinatown.
My work has been exhibited widely and awards include two Canada Council grants. I've served as a board member of the Communication Arts Society, the Society for Photographic Education, the Professional Employees Association, the North Saanich Parks Commission and the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association. Spare time is spent hiking, reading, listening to opera and jazz, cooking and visiting my daughter Simone, who works in film in Vancouver, and my grandson, Emmett.
